Replacing the Alternator in Your Volkswagen

Your vehicle's electrical system relies on a steady supply of power to run everything from the ignition system to the infotainment display. The alternator is responsible for charging the battery and providing electricity while the engine is running.

How to Replace a Defective Alternator in Your VW Jetta

In your Volkswagen Jetta, a failing alternator can lead to dimmed headlights, stalling, or a completely dead battery. Use the following guide to replace a defective alternator:

1. Disconnect the Battery

Always disconnect the negative battery terminal first to prevent dangerous electrical arcs.

2 Remove the Serpentine Belt

Use a wrench on the belt tensioner to release pressure and slide the belt off the pulley.

3. Unplug the Electrical Connectors

Carefully remove the main power cable nut and unplug the multi-pin connector from the back of the housing.

4. Remove Mounting Bolts

Unscrew the long bolts holding the alternator to the engine bracket.

5. Position the New OEM Alternator

Slide the new genuine unit into the bracket and hand-start the mounting bolts to ensure they are not cross-threaded.

6. Reinstall the Belt and Wiring

Tighten the mounting bolts, reconnect all electrical leads, and route the serpentine belt back over the pulley.

7. Reconnect and Test

Reconnect the battery and start the engine. With a multimeter, verify that the system is charging between 13.8 and 14.4 volts.

If your car still won't start, the problem could be the starter motor.
