Replacing Faulty or Damaged Tire Pressure Sensors

A tire pressure sensor or TPMS sensor is an advanced telemetrics device mounted inside the wheel assembly that continuously measures the air pressure and temperature of your tires. For Volkswagen Jetta drivers, these sensors communicate via radio frequencies to the dashboard, ensuring your vehicle maintains proper rolling resistance, optimal fuel economy, and maximum braking traction.

How to Replace Your TPMS Sensor

1. Deflate the Tire Completely

Remove the valve core to completely evacuate all air pressure from the wheel assembly.

2. Unseat the Tire Bead

Use a professional tire machine to break the bead and push the rubber sidewall down, exposing the mounting point.

3. Remove the Retaining Nut

Use an 11mm or 12mm socket to loosen the external collar nut securing the old valve stem to the alloy wheel.

4. Extract the Old Sensor

Push the stem through the rim hole and carefully pull the old tire pressure sensor out of the tire cavity.

5. Install and Relearn the New Unit

Seat the fresh OEM sensor, torque the nut to the factory specification (usually around 4-8 Nm), reinflate the tire, and initiate the dashboard relearn procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tire Pressure Sensors

What does the TPMS light look like?
It appears on the dash as a yellow cross-section of a tire with an exclamation point in the middle.
How long does a TPMS battery usually last?
OEM sensor batteries are designed to last between 7 to 10 years or approximately 100,000 miles.
Does my Volkswagen use direct or indirect sensors?
Many modern Volkswagen models utilize the indirect ABS method, but specific trims and older models use direct in-wheel sensors; check your VIN.
